I highly recommend the Coast Guard to any young person all the time. I believe the small boats are the way to go . A small station makes for a tight family group. Working together ,trusting each other ,playing in the surf with 36 footers was a great experience and I cherish the memories of all my good buddies from USCG Station Siuslaw .

These guys made my 83 year-old dad's day today. He's a retired USCG Commander and wanted to stop by and look at their boats. (he used to test surf boats in IL Waco) and they couldn't have been friendlier or more respectful. The OD arranged a full tour with a seaman who answered all of Dad's questions and even helped me get him back in the car. Pure class and professionalism. Semper Paratus!

I was the first cook at Siuslaw River Lifeboat Station when it was commissioned in 1970. Cooked three Thanksgiving dinners before leaving in 1972. To whoever is the cook on duty this Thanksgiving I send my sympathy and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. If you need help next year let me know and I will fly up from Arizona and help you.
